Elemental Alchemy

a poem of calcination

How is it that we are
below-ground
for so much longer
than we walk the surface?
At least the carbon, anyway.
How can a half-life
be longer than a life?
How can our imprint
be tallied up to a
stain of charcoal
and wither of bone?

air, earth, fire, water.
I ask you, which of these
is most alive?
I am all four, yet
each will end me.
too much oxygen
and I will ignite
too much water
and I have no room for air
too much earth
and my water spills forth
too much fire
and I become stone.

What holographic alchemy
do I expect from these
ponderings anyway?
life is simply
a wisp
I followed at birth;
there is no place
set at the periodic table
for shenanigans of soul.
