How to Write Content You Can Still Be Proud of in 10 Years

A few simple tweaks today can save you from embarrassment in the future

I opened Facebook on my phone the other day and I couldn’t help but laugh. It wasn’t a meme. The first thing I saw was a memory from years ago, it was a picture of me and I looked a lot different than I do today. For one thing, I had hair (but no beard), but most noticeable to me was how my sense of style has changed over the intervening years.

It was a classic case of, What was I thinking back then?

Sometimes we make choices that hold up over time and sometimes we don’t. Thanks to the internet, those choices (good and bad) live forever in cyber-land and can come back to haunt you. My goal is for my kids — now two and four years old — to be able to read my writing one day and find wisdom and guidance for their lives. I want my work to hold up over the years and not create a cringe-fest when I look back on it.

If you want to be proud of your writing, write about things that matter to your reader’s lives and not just what’s trendy right now.

Building an audience and standing out online means you have to have the guts to be different. The internet is overrun with cliche advice and clickbait writing. You may not have the power to change that, but you do not have to add to the noise.

I do not have a decade of experience as a writer yet. But I’m adopting these standards because I know they’ll help me produce writing I can be proud of and that my kids will want to read one day. You can steal what you think will help you.
