Day 998

Hummingbird

The other morning as I was watering some plants in my garden I got lazy. Rather than walking around the pool, I opted to send the arc of water from the hose over the pool to my newly planted rosemary bushes.

A friend was happy I did.

A familiar series of chirps drew my eyes upward just as flash of emerald green swooped down from the air and hovered just under the stream. Skipping in and out of the droplets, my little friend dipped a slender straw into the cascade and then swooshed away again, alighting on the adjacent fence. I was transfixed as I watched perpetually beating wings fall still, as the bird stretched them one way and another, pulling them in to shake and then stretch them again. Then, with a chirp, he took to the air again, returning to the water, drinking and bathing and drawing within about a foot of my marveling gaze.

It was impossible not to smile. The cheerful chirps and utterly delighted dance started my day perfectly.

And then later I got a hug.

Wednesday was good.

Today, it was pretty amazing too. No hummingbirds. No hugs. But I did get to cook a stupendous meal with Chef James Trees of Esther’s Kitchen (virtual) and when I saw that another pal was doing the live stream too, we joined for a Zoom chat and cooked together. A mini do-over of my birthday dinner — without dropping any food on the keyboard.
