Needs Must

As if the company of others was a challenge. In the world before the fear we walked like lions. In a pride. Not any more.

If you listen carefully you can hear the beating heart of loneliness. Like a distant drum, muffled, unsteady. In any street, shop or cafe; scan the bars, banks and queues. Boom, boom, pa-boom, the beta-beat rhythm of uncertainty. Each brave face scarred by a seam of buried anguish.

A recorded voice calls out encouragement and advice as needled shoppers trudge the narrow aisles between shelves. Tired eyes blink above cotton muzzles, minds quietly toasting under harsh chainstore neon. Meeting the needs, nothing more. Don’t touch, keep back, danger stranger. The sight of your own selections jostling in the trolley.

Fearthink beaming from coloured flashing screens that hypnotise and woo: platoons of televisions barking from hidden speakers. ”Be afraid…stay safe…we care about you…obey…”

Tall, untouched piles of newspapers with different names but identical headlines. Groupthink hidden behind the mask. Power walking in the footprints of fear.

So many drooping shoulders. Bent by the weight of a year of tears; driven apart by demands we have been warned not to question.

Big mistake, sweet master. Where questions are forbidden the answers scream into the silence between us.

If you stand back and look you will see civilisation dying.
