Balancing Religion and American Life

I found it surprising how much of a predicament practitioners of certain faiths can have with school schedules. I have some experience with this, as my aunt and cousins are Muslim and I have seen first-hand the struggles they can have scheduling prayer throughout the day, along with the difficulty of fasting practices during a full workday. The article by Pincus did a good job of offering some insight to conflicts of religion and school for a Jewish student. My initial thought would be that to operate in American society some compromises must be made, but after reading I can see where Christian students seem to be at an advantage in this country when it comes to observing important holidays such as Easter and Christmas. One thing I would be interested in learning about is the scheduling of school and work in relation to religious events in other cultures where Christianity is the minority religion, such as in Israel or Saudi Arabia. I think this perspective would be beneficial in gaining a deeper understanding of the difficulties practitioners of a minority religion face in a given region.

While I would like for all religions to be able to take the time off they need, I feel that it would be almost impossible to meet the demands of ALL religions. After reading the article and listening to the podcasts, I feel that a lot of the argument is centered around the “main” worldwide religions, leaving practitioners of less mainstream faiths out of the conversation. Even if we could meet the needs of all Christians, Muslims, Jews, Hindus, etc., there would still be religions left out due to their minority status. This is why I feel it is up to the individual to balance their faith with the society they are a part of, very much as the Constitution of the U.S. lays out with its separation of church and state. This is obviously not the perfect solution to all people, and everyone will have to make compromises, but I feel that is the price that must be paid in a country such as the United States that allows such a variety of religious views to coexist due to the First Amendment.
