Kundalini Rising

Over the moon in Jaipur, India 2021, Photo Courtesy of Upasana Sharma

I wait. I deepen in the room.
Fed lions, glowing, congregate
In corners, sleep and fade. For whom
It may concern I, tawny, wait.
Time flowing through the window; day
Spilling on the board its bright
Last blood, folding ( Big, Gauzy, Gray),
A moth sits on the western light.
Sits on my heart that, darkened, drips
No honey from its punctured core,
Yet feeds my hands and feeds my lips.
The moon, the moon, is at the door!

Hirayangarbha, the one, splits into two
Birthing all manifest polarity
Yearning for merging, a pulse that renews
The flow of life in continuity
Kybalion spake, as above, so below
Kundalini rises from root to crown
Energies two, in gentleness mellow
Copulate in heart, wherein they both drown
Thus as one becomes two, to merge as one
We see singularity of oneness
In the light of the spiritual Sun
We re-cognise interconnectedness
Love the singular unifying force
Within our heart, perennial resource.

Let’s land on the structure
Of Earth’s carved face
Feet firmly planted
While our spirit is blown
To the four winds
And comes back again
To find center.

Footnote: According to Kundaliniguide.com, Kundalini is a Sanskrit term from ancient India that identifies the arising of an energy and consciousness which has been coiled at the base of the spine since birth, and is the source of the life force (pranic energy, chi , bio-energy). Yogic science suggests that this energy triggered the formation of the child in the womb, and then coils 3 ½ times at the base of the spine to hold the energy field in stasis until we die, when it uncoils and returns to its source.

Kundalini may unravel and arise from the base of the spine (or sometimes from the feet) due to spiritual practices, or in response to life events, and when this happens it may move gradually, uncoiling like a snake, or quickly and explosively, into the gut, the heart or the head. This event can be startling and chaotic, frightening or blissful, and it usually triggers months and years of new sensations and changes in the person who awakens it. It may feel like the body’s wiring has moved from 110 to 220, and it takes time to adapt to it. Highly possible to find acknowledgement of this spiritual movement in many yogic and tantric traditions, Tantric Buddhism, Taoism, gnostic mystical traditions, some Native American teachings, and indigenous societies. An image of a rising snake in the body signifies its existence in the esoteric art of many cultures. The capacity to intensify and raise energy in the body has been explored for thousands of years. It is a natural human potential.

Although Kundalini awakening is the most potent, yet dangerous form of meditation, it can trigger a wide range of phenomena, both positive and negative causing significant changes in the physical, emotional, sensate and psychic capacities, creating stress in vulnerable areas of the body, opening the heart and mind to major shifts in perspective, also leading to many unique and unfamiliar sensations including shaking, vibrating, spontaneous movement, visions, and so much more.

In the introduction to Jung’s book The Psychology of Kundalini Yoga, Sonu Shamdasani puts forth “The emergence of depth psychology was historically paralleled by the translation and widespread dissemination of the texts of yoga… for the depth psychologies sought to liberate themselves from the stultifying limitations of Western thought to develop maps of inner experience grounded in the transformative potential of therapeutic practices. A similar alignment of “theory” and “practice” seemed to be embodied in the yogic texts that moreover had developed independently of the bindings of Western thought. Further, the initiatory structure adopted by institutions of psychotherapy brought its social organization into proximity with that of yoga. Hence, an opportunity for a new form of comparative psychology opened up.

In a way, it is like a cable with a plug point that might not have found its energy socket. Today, many look for this socket through practices such as kundalini yoga, hatha yoga, tantra and ecstatic dancing(Middle eastern Sufi whirling dervishes, anyone?)
