As gas prices are soaring everywhere investors ask themselves “What do high gas prices mean for the stock market?”. The higher gas prices are caused by the economic sanctions imposed on Russia by the West and primarily the US. The rise in energy prices scared the S&P500 which has dropped more than 3%. Rising oil prices are extremely concerning because they mean higher costs for nearly everything, all the way from heating to transporting goods. One prediction is that if the high oil prices keep rising then the central banks might raise their interest rates to help fight back against inflation. Then again higher oil prices already have a huge negative impact on the economy which is why the feds may not want to introduce too high of an interest rate. To better understand this hiking interest rates is a tool that the government uses to fight interest rates. If interest rates are higher on loans means less borrowing which is technically supposed to lead to lower prices for consumer goods. However, the new interest rate would have bad news for the economy since this makes it much harder for investors to buy and sell stock.

Most people will believe the price for oil will correct itself since the less demand for a product the less price. However, the problem with this is that it discounts how much oil we use in our daily lives. ll the way from heating, transporting goods, antibiotics, and plastic, the demand for oil is not going away any time soon. One thing to note is that the last time oil prices were this high was during the financial crisis in 2008. However many experts don’t believe that a financial crisis will happen again since many consumers have money saved up and the labor market is strong.

The thing is if you have a well-diversified portfolio with blue-chip stocks, tech companies and index funds, the best bet for you would be o sit still and wait till we get out of the storm. However, if you are looking to capitalize on this situation and trying to buy energy stocks just know that many experts believe the stock prices are more expensive than they should be. Overall it’s best not to try to game the market and instead sit back and watch this thing unfold. If you are stressing over the huge price swings, maybe because you are in need of short-term cash then you should make sure you are positioned in such a way that you can meet those requirements.
