Why you should root for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

XXXVII. The 2002 Super Bowl that I hate to think about (as a Raider fan), although it was a work of art from the Tampa Bay standpoint. Jon Gruden’s Buccaneers defeated the Raiders 48–21 in their first ever championship, which was a monstrous accomplishment if you know anything about this franchise.

In 1976 the Tampa Bay Buccaneer organization was born. I get it, a new football team isn’t going to thrive right off the bat — but losing your first 26 games is rough. The Bucs first playoff appearance wasn’t until the team faced a dreadful 14 consecutive losing seasons, which ultimately was how they acquired the coaching & players to make 10 straight playoff appearances.

Remember Bo Jackson? The Bucs selected Bo with the first overall pick of the 1986 NFL draft — But Bo went to go play baseball with the Kansas City Royals instead of signing with the Bucs, who were atrocious in the 1980’s and really could’ve used the help. Then, you know it! Big Bo Jackson returned to play football for the Raiders — leading them right to a Super Bowl victory. Maybe that 02' Super Bowl was Karma.

The NFL Draft is underrated. It can put a struggling franchise on the road to recovery and set the team up for years to come. For Tampa Bay, this draft came in 1995, when they grabbed Warren Sapp and Derrick Brooks with their two first-round draft picks. Adding two future Hall of Famers in one draft is pretty amazing, let alone in one round. Those two had everything to do with the teams success in the near future.

After that 02' championship, the Bucs fell off. Injury problems and staff changes ensued before they resorted to the old, yet brilliant strategy of building through the draft. They’ve finally found a franchise quarterback (which is hard to do find) in Jameis Winston, who broke numerous team passing records in is first two seasons. The guy has the skill set and weapons around him to be one of the top dogs in the league this year. In addition to Winston, the Bucs acquired Mike Evans and O.J Howard through the draft — a dynamic wide reciever/tight end combo that has crazy potential, and that’s without mentioning the addition of Desean Jackson who had 1,000+ receiving yards last year for Washington.

I would say that you could take a chance on this Bucs’ team. The stadium has a pirate ship that shoots off cannons. I mean, not actual cannon balls, but still — cannons! Tampa is a young franchise that’s had some low lows, and some high highs. The hype for this newly assembled squad is through the roof, they’ve got a solid nucleus that should be good for a long time. If you’re going to jump on this bandwagon, you’ll have to do it immediately — otherwise that pirate ship is going to sail.
