Mental Training for Success

Success often seems elusive — sometimes far off in the distance, sometimes just beyond our grasp, or else with us but held on to by our fingertips. A major cause of this problem, when you step back and look at it critically, is our own mental attitudes that either weaken us or outright sabotage us, making it difficult to attain or hold on to success.

But changing your mindset isn’t impossible. It takes a lot of hard work and commitment, but you can certainly change the way your mind works. Here are five things you can do to get your mind ready for success.

1. Be honest with yourself

Every time you ignore your shortcomings, your flaws, your failures, every time you pretend they don’t exist, you are actually tying your mind down. If you can’t admit where you’re falling short, you won’t ever be able to better yourself. The path to success, to greatness, is really all about continuous self-improvement. So, be honest with yourself. Turn it into a regular exercise by setting aside time for it every day, or at least every week. List your mistakes and what you did right but could have done better. Then, work out a plan to improve.

2. Seek out constructive criticism

There’s a limit to how much you can objectively analyse yourself. Hence the second step: seek an external perspective. Of course, don’t take just anyone’s opinion. A lot of people may not be qualified or experienced enough to really help out, and some will only drag you down. Ideally, look for people with expertise in the field you’re working in, or plan to work in, people who will give you an unvarnished opinion and also tell you what you need to do next.

3. Meditate

A focused mind is incredibly powerful. Unfortunately, most of us lack concentration. This is where meditation comes in. Think of it as one type of mental exercise (there are more to come). Even a 15-minute session every day will significantly boost your focus over time. However, to make the most of your potential, set aside at least an hour. I know, I know, who has the time? But if you’re really serious about accomplishing something, you’ll find a way.

4. Visualize

Another mental exercise is visualization. First, keep in mind that to ever become successful, you need clear goals. Then, it’s all a matter of working towards achieving those goals. Start by visualising the entire journey of getting to your goals. You will find that all the time you put into visualising helps you deal with hurdles that crop up in your real-world journey.

5. Practice problem-solving

Every day, search for problems to solve. The road to greatness is littered with sticky situations, intractable challenges. Practice will help your mind acclimatize to new situations. It could be a problem your neighbour has, or maybe something you read about in the news. Eventually, you’ll be able to find your way around whatever life has to throw at you.
