WHY ARE SCABIES CASES INCREASING?

WHY ARE SCABIES CASES INCREASING?

Dermatology Specialist Prof. Stating that scabies has turned into an epidemic recently. Doctor said, “The disease must be treated. Otherwise, the spread rate increases even more,” he said.

Scabies, whose name we have heard frequently in recent days, is an infection that affects about 300 million people in the world, that is, it is a skin infection caused by multicellular parasites. Scabies, which has an important place in the history of medicine and is defined as the first human disease whose cause is known; Sarcoptes scabiei var, which is not noticeable to the human eye. It is a very itchy and contagious disease caused by a parasite called ‘Hominis’.

Turkey iHealth member JCI Izmir hospital clinic Dermatology Specialist Prof. Dr. explained what needs to be known about this as follows.

What are the reasons?

Scabies has turned into a common disease at a level that can be called an epidemic these days. More than one reason is responsible for this, such as immigrants and refugees, the increase of immunocompromised and mobility-restricted elderly patients, the increase in drug resistance, the increase in sexually transmitted diseases and the reluctance to go to the hospital due to the pandemic. In addition, it is thought that the ongoing overcrowding and homelessness may contribute to this increase. But none of these reasons alone can explain the recent increase in scabies.

According to a study conducted in Germany in 2018, the number of patients undergoing scabies treatment increased by 200 percent. In this study, the reason for the increase was evaluated as a result of all of the reasons listed above. Regardless of these reasons, it was stated that scabies fluctuates every 7 years and peaks every 15–25 years.

Who does it occur in?

The disease can be seen in all age groups, all ethnicities and all socioeconomic levels without gender discrimination. Person-to-person transmission occurs through situations that require close contact. Only for human-to-human transmission, it usually takes about 15–20 minutes. Mange is not transmitted from animal to human. Because the parasite in animals cannot survive or reproduce in the human body.

What are the ways of treatment?

The most important step of treatment for scabies is patient compliance. It is very important for patients diagnosed with scabies to have simultaneous treatment, even if they do not have symptoms of other people with whom they share a living space. The absence of itching in other individuals does not mean that the disease will not be transmitted.

Local treatment applied from the neck down should remain on the body for 3 days, a shower should be taken at the end of the 3rd day. Although a one-time treatment is sufficient for most patients, the same treatment should be repeated after a week, especially in resistant cases. In addition, the clothes should be washed at 60 degrees and ironed with a steam iron. It should be noted that even in cases where the treatment is successful, signs of the disease and itching may persist for another 2–6 weeks.

What symptoms does it cause?

The parasite appears 4–6 weeks after infection in the form of itching, which increases, especially at night. Itching is most common between the fingers of the hands, wrists, armpits, around the navel, nipples in women, genital area in men. In infants, there is an involvement of the palms and soles of the feet.

How is it diagnosed?

The disease can be easily diagnosed due to the fact that health professionals are more aware. The most important points in the diagnosis of more than one family member to be itching, itching in between the fingers of a hand, and at night the increase in heat that live within the parasite be seen in the form of wavy lines white can be sorted.
