3 simple steps

Unsolicited and simple advice from a budding photographer and recovering marketer.

I love iteration when I am creating. I also enjoy iteration when sharing. I’ve married the two and found a simple process that works for me to better share my best work to others who are most likely to appreciate it and help make it even better!

Here, goes:

I’m a visual person, and writing takes a lot of concentration, so Instagram is really perfect for me with photography. And regardless what you think of these types of social applications in general, it’s one of the easiest and quickest ways to grow and maintain (scale) a relatively large fan base for your visual work from potential fans all over the world.

But remember, you’re trying to build a quality audience to connect with. The more you put in, the more you get in return. Search for, and follow those users/profiles that align to your top 3 to 5 “tags” or areas that you want your work to be associated with.

For example, if you’re an animal photographer who specializes in capturing animals in their natural habitat, search for things like “animal photography” or “nature photographer”, or your favorite artist in this category, even animals, “bears”, “moose”, “meerkat”.

This is not the time to be super picky about following others and allowing others to follow you. You will come across spam accounts, but so what? Just don’t include any personal contact info. and more importantly, like, like, like the photos of people who like you and the photos you want to be associated with.

Kindness goes a long way anywhere. Even on Instagram.

And finally, use the simple reporting features available on any (free) business Instagram account to collect feedback and see which of your photos are connecting (high impressions/most likes/comments)

Perhaps improve those photos over time, by releasing updated edits and ask for feedback from your followers. The “polling feature” comes in handy here.
